Joint promotion for Bali and Beyond

(Balitrips.net) / 18 Feb 2013
Joint promotion for Bali and BeyondTen provinces in Indonesia will jointly promote the Bali and Beyond tourism program through the Tourist Information Center (TIC), established in 2000. Ida Bagus Kade Subhiksu, head of the provincial tourism office, said that Bali had already built the TIC Mitra Praja in the Kuta area in 2000 but its function had yet to be optimized.

“The TIC was built to intensively promote Bali’s tourism, but other provinces can also use the center to introduce their tourism potential to local and international markets,” explained Subhiksu.

The Bali and Beyond tourism program was launched to widely promote Indonesian tourism, with Bali as the main gate to other tourist destinations across the archipelago.

The center was established in Bali due to its position as the country’s main tourist destination, welcoming millions of visitors every year.

Subhiksu said ten provincial administrations, including Bali, Banten, Central and East Java, Yogyakarta, Jakarta, West Java, East and West Nusa Tenggara, had already signed a memorandum of understanding.

“The province of North Sumatra has just joined the group,” he added.

Previously, each province conducted separate promotional activities, making them less effective and attractive to potential clients and visitors.

“To make it more efficient, the TIC will soon be managed by a professional company,” Subhiksu added.

Ketut Ardana, chairman of the Association of Indonesian Tour and Travel Agencies (ASITA) Bali, said that the joint promotions would be more attractive to visitors.

“Indonesia has rich tourism attractions. Every province has its own unique culture and beautiful nature that is still underdeveloped and unknown to the mainstream tourism world,” Ardana pointed out. By carrying out joint promotions, the impact would be greater.

“ASITA has already organized the annual Bali and Beyond Travel Fair to invite tourists to visit other places outside Bali,” Ardana said.

Nationally, the Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry has designated 15 main tourist destinations in Indonesia.

Nine developed tourist sites are Bali, Batam and Bintan islands, Bromo’s crater in East Java, Bunaken in North Sulawesi, Borobudur temple in Central Java, the Gili Islands in Lombok, Lake Toba in North Sumatra, as well as the cities of Jakarta and Yogyakarta.

The six underdeveloped destinations are Derawan Island, Bangka and Belitung islands, Komodo Island, Mentawai Island, Wakatobi and Raja Ampat.

The government is now implementing various infrastructure projects in the six emerging and underdeveloped tourist destinations to provide easier access to them.

Sugeng Supriyanto, a tourism practitioner, said that the market for the Bali and Beyond tourism program was huge and would be mostly dominated by European and American tourists.

“European and American tourists usually stay longer, between 10 and 14 days every vacation, spending at least US$6,000 per person per trip,” Supriyanto said. Promotion of the Bali and Beyond program had to be creative and innovative.

“Bali is the best place to start the promotion as people come here as their main vacation,” he said.

However, through this promotion, tourists may become interested in visiting other places in Indonesia, he added.

“The availability of air transportation, access to airports, harbors and roads is important if we want to seriously develop the Bali and Beyond program,” he warned.
